This blufftop great room holds one of the most coveted views on the North Coast—river meeting sea, horizon stretching wide. A massive black lava rock fireplace, red-tagged and long past its useful life, had been competing with that view for years. We cleared it away, brought in an efficient wood-burning stove, and chose furniture and a rug that introduce lightness and color without asking for attention. The room now belongs to the landscape.
